A few summers ago, Birdblack Design head honchos, Sarah and Dave took a trip to Long Island, NY; to learn, to experience and to discover the true roots of Hamptons Glam. Given Australian summer is Northern Hemisphere winter, the Hamptons were not ablaze with the rich and famous that bring the illustrious parties over their summer season. The homes were in their winter hibernation state, allowing Team BD to peruse and experience at their leisure.
Coming back to Australia, and implementing specific features and aspects into fusion design styles, here is what we learnt:
THE EXTERIOR
From Southampton through to Montauk, two styles of home are evident. The first style is recognisably Classic Hamptons.

The second style, which you may be surprised to discover, is a Dutch Colonial Design.

The Dutch Colonial Design denotes a much more traditional and European style. However, we can note that in both styles, both homes are embellished with dark-coloured roof tiles. These kind of darker roofs with white facades are tell-tale hallmarks of Hampton homes.
FLOORING
Flooring in Hampton homes are more often than not, a dark stained timber, in particular: oak. It is rare to see anything other than timber on the floors in the common areas. Even though a dark tone is quite typical of the Hamptons, you can also see variations of white washed and mid-toned oaks.
In terms of patterning, most common flooring styles are either a wide board plank or a smaller board in a herringbone or chevron pattern. This timber flooring will flow throughout the home, with the exception of wet areas, like Bathrooms and Laundry.

WALLPAPER AND PATTERNING
One thing that is abundantly obvious in Hampton homes, are that the residents do not shy away from layering and patterns. Wandering through these Long Island homes, Team BD discovered each room was a feast for the eyes; with multiple layers of texture, pattern and colour. Hampton’s residents recognise that bold moves are captivating: even within their homes!

WHITE MARBLE
In every Hamptons Bathroom and Hamptons Kitchen, there is sure to be an appearance of white marble. Most often, Carrara marble will be evident. From subway tiles to mosaics, the classic structure of this marble lends itself to a wonderfully timeless and elegant look.

In Australia, we are blessed to have both coastline and country greenery abundant, much like Long Island in New York. Therefore, it is quite easy to transfer these gorgeous qualities to both beachside and country town residences. Australia also loves the blue and white combinations and we are blessed to have so many varieties of our own home-grown oaks at our fingertips.
