Located in the picturesque coastal town of Kiama, NSW, both home owners had owned several properties prior. They had now acquired their dream home; the place where they would come to slowly wind down amongst the laid-back nature of the surrounding neighbourhood.
Our clients’ design brief consisted of a two-part project. The upper level would in fact become our clients’ dream home: a representation of their personalities and a place they could enjoy with their extended families.
The lower level (and second part of the project) was to be rejuvenated and restored from the dilapidated and unused space into rental accommodation.
The original laundry upstairs was extremely tired and lacked both functional bench space and storage. We were able to completely strip out this room and include maximised working areas. We used a combination of full height storage for brooms and mops along with overhead units. We ensured there was substantial room for both a washing machine and dryer, whilst still allowing adequate space for a guest toilet.
We made good use of a blank wall by installing a fold down ironing board. The finishes we selected relate back to the other wet rooms in the home. It is now a fresh and very appealing space to use by both our clients and their guests.

A word from the owners:
After we had purchased an extremely tired older home with good bones I became overwhelmed with the renovation task ahead. That was when I contacted Sarah. She quickly responded, meeting with us to talk through our options. I have to say how impressed we were with Sarah’s ability to listen to our needs and interpret them in a way that we hadn’t thought about but loved. We had absolute confidence in Sarah – she is highly creative, organised and able to drive projects through to completion while keeping everyone working together well. Sarah never lost sight of the final product while ensuring the project progressed and the quality of the finished product was second to none. I highly recommend Sarah and Birdblack Design to anyone thinking of renovating or planning their next build.
