Nestled between the escarpment and the sea is a bright and sunny family home. This family of five required a full home Furniture Curation for their newly purchased home. We drew inspiration from the surrounding natural landscape and created a delightful fusion of Mid-century undertones with a coastal interpretation.
Working within the existing footprint, we were challenged to create a functional living room layout that provided a comfortable relaxation zone for the family, but also kept a formal element as you enter the home. By using a combination of armchairs and ottomans, in conjunction with smaller tables, the homeowners can rearrange the furniture to suit both entertaining and everyday life in motion.
The family has three children which allowed us to be playful with our selections, while also being mindful that these mature with them. To achieve this, we handpicked wallpapers that represented each personality, while maintaining a palette that could be adapted as they grew older.
Being bookended by the lush green escarpment and the blue of the sea, local artist Renee Kamaretsos was commissioned to create artwork that reflected the surroundings, and our family’s own flavour.
An oversized custom Dining Table forms the focal point of this coastal home, perfect for Christmas family dinners, summers around the pool, and rainy day boardgames. An extension of this dining space is a second living area that the family regularly uses while snacking after school and completing homework, all the while in earshot of Mum in the Kitchen.
We’ve built a foundation from which this family can create memories and live their story by the sea.
A note from the owners:
We were so excited when our dream home came onto the market. As soon as we purchased it, I knew I wanted to engage a design service to make it feel like ours, as we intend to be here for a very long time! We wanted it to be beautiful and interesting, but also practical for a family with young kids (and a puppy), and somewhere we could be comfortable in. I had discovered Birdblack via their beautiful design of the South Sailor restaurant, and had been following on Instagram for a while. Their aesthetic is interesting, creative and uses unusual elements. But they can do literally anything!
I am so happy we engaged them. They have access to suppliers and makers that I would never have known about or been able to access. Everything was sourced or custom created to fit the space beautifully. Our sofas in particular are beautiful but also very comfortable! That’s quite challenging to find. Our home feels warm and interesting and beautiful. We are very happy.
During the process, we encountered Covid lockdowns and the resulting supply challenges happening across the world. Birdblack could not have been more helpful in managing this and communicating between us and suppliers, and always made themselves available where possible for delivery and installation. They’re a talented and professional bunch! We have since engaged them again for a larger scale project, the proof is in the pudding.
