Birdblack Design was engaged by The Illawarra Steelers Club to revitalise a small dark and dingy space, that was filled with old play equipment and overwhelmingly under-utilised.

Inspired by Manhattan, speak-easy, underground bars – the desire was for dark and moody, with rich textures and vibrant patterns. The flooring is true terracotta tiles, in a herringbone pattern. This lean into the old world was inspired by hundred-year-old New York bar flooring which would have told many tales.

The stand-out feature is absolutely the terrazzo benchtops – a black base with flecks of white, grey and terracotta to complement the flooring. To contrast the pops of orange, we incorporated shades of emerald green. A dark emerald wall paint as well as custom-made Warwick velvet seating.  The half-round fluting design with tan leather benchseat by Stitches Upholstery Creations makes a statement as you enter. Hegi Design House customised the Underlined stools in the emerald green for this project.

Brass highlights are featured; in particular, the palm-inspired wall lights. Black cabinetry stocks all the bar essentials with cool arch designs where the liquor bottles are on the display. The arches have taken their inspiration from the NYC subway.

Soft lighting and dimmers really set the mood for the space. Tropical wallpaper brings in bold New York patterning and a secret print on the glass for our evening guests: as the sun sets, the Statue of Liberty reveals herself. During the day, the windows remain clear. How very exciting! We trust that you will have a wonderful time at 5 Beekman and enjoy yet another Birdblack Design.
