Sarah making bold choices in her own home indicates the level of sophistication and charm she believes Birdblack Design inspires. The palette is certainly dark and moody, but with so much natural light pouring, the aesthetic is airy.

‘Grenache Residence’ was purchased off the original owners who built it in the late 1970s.

Given that Sarah is in fact the Lead Designer AND owner of Birdblack Design, she was very much aware of what she was looking for in a home ready to be renovated. Most importantly on her list was a brick home with very good structure. Many older coastal homes are weatherboard, and the erosion and issues are plentiful. Purchasing an older brick home leads to fewer structural issues as the years roll on.

Moving into the Bathroom, initially the toilet was separated, but by knocking out a wall, a luxurious and spacious Bathroom for the family to enjoy was made. An oversized shower, a lovely large inbuilt bath and wall-to-wall alcove gives the space its structure. Matte black tapware and accessories bring all the highlights to the space, really popping against the white and Blackbutt timber. The elongated hexagonal subway tiles give plenty of dimension. The toilet is tucked in between the bath and the wall-hung basin, making a perfect base for the alcove and the completely mirrored recessed storage with LED lighting between all the mirrors.

Plenty of light floods into this bright, white bathroom with the help of both a highlight window and the skylight up above the bath. Vertical heated bars are also in the matte black providing a sculptural yet functional element.

Purchasing in Farmborough Heights was also an established choice as both Sarah and Dave love nature. The area is completely surrounded by tree life, with ‘Grenache Residence’ indulging in lovely native flora and fauna, with abounding birdlife always nestled in the high branches at (and above) roof level. The home is just 15min drive from the CBD, but with the bushland around feels like a mountaintop retreat.
