Meet the Team: Dave
This die-hard AFL player, Dave Nolen, has been with Birdblack Design since the very start. Originally from Canberra, Dave studied Mechanical Engineering at ANU. After graduating, this engineering genius landed a position at BlueScope in Wollongong.
Prior to moving to Wollongong, Dave met the love of his life: Sarah Bowman.
Dave was due for an epic Europe adventure in 2012 and then moved to Wollongong in 2013; so a very long-distance relationship ensued!
Back from Europe, Dave popped the question and on Australia Day, 2014, Sarah Bowman became Sarah Nolen.
Sarah is of course the name and face of Birdblack Design. As Owner and Founder, she has grown BD into a flourishing and successful business. Dave and the rest of the staff look forward to celebrating Birdblack Design’s 6th Birthday in June!
Speaking of family, Dave’s Grandad imparted the importance of one very special game: AFL!!! Dave has been playing footy since he was 10. His favourite team are the Geelong Cats; his hero, Gary Ablett. The Cats lost 3 AFL Grand Finals in the 90s, but brought the trophy home in 2007, 2009 and 2011, much to Dave’s delight. He bleeds blue and white!
The Wollongong Lions AFL Club have become a huge part of their lives. Dave freely admits his beloved Wollongong Lions has been the most enjoyable time of his football career. The Lions won the 2017 and 2019 Grand Finals, treasured memories for Dave and the boys.
A little message, direct from Dave: “I can’t say enough about how great it is to live in Wollongong. Sarah and I have such great communities in church, football and work. The success of Birdblack Design has continued to amaze me with all the hard work and effort Sarah and the team put in. Wollongong is 100% our home and I couldn’t ask for anything more than being here with my beautiful wife, enjoying the company of all the amazing people we do life with.”
Whilst Dave is a full-time maintenance project manager at the steelworks, he is a dedicated member of the BD Team. You can often find him arranging deliveries, unpacking furniture, installing artworks and putting his engineering prowess to good work in terms of problem solving and muscle power.
BD is grateful to Dave for his laid-back and hard-working nature. He is always up fora good laugh, good food, good beer and a good life. We hope you enjoy getting to know him more in the future!
