DIY with Birdblack Design: Ryan’s Suite Styling Tips

So yes, we may all be stuck (read SAFE) at home, and we may have a little extra time up our sleeves to enjoy the simple things in life.

Ryan Xuereb, Birdblack Design’s resident Curator, Interior Decorator and Stylist gives us a super simple Suite (or is it sweet?) DIY tutorial on making your bedroom the plush and welcoming haven we all need these days!

Ryan is very much the vintage man, loving greens and velvet, both interiors and clothing. Enjoy glimpsing into Ryan’s own Master Suite with his vintage styling perfection!

Here we go!

Step 1: Fit your Fitted Sheet. Don’t skimp on your thread count! We love soft linen!

Step 2: Add your Flat Sheet – see how soft they are in combination?

Step 3: Your lush doona and bed cover. Our trick? Always go one size up in your doona cover from your bed size, allowing for overhang. No one likes unsightly sheets from the sides… this makes your doona look too small for your bed. You know what they say – size matters. So if you have a queen bed; get that kingsize doona baby!

Step 4: Fold back the Flat Sheet for a perfect contrast from the doona cover

Step 5: Add in European pillows for a little bit of height and a lot of luxury

Step 6: Use you sleeping pillows to colour match your sheets

Step 7: Dress pillows to match your doona cover

Step 8: Style decorative pillows to your heart’s desire! Use symmetry for a formal look; use colours to match your sheet tones; use alternative colours to create contrast in the space by tying the whole space together with your artworks and rug. Play with different textures, patterns and sizes. For a more relaxed look, group the pillows together with different heights in a staggered layer formation.

Step 9: Last, but not least, utilise a throw at the foot of the bed. A beautiful final touch and practical to use as a pull over, now that these cooler nights are upon us.

Relax and enjoy!
